2004 Cake Bake Off Results
The results of the 2004 Cake Bake off are in, and the First Place winners are Frank Schonberger and Kim Kortenbach.
Best in Taste: Frank Schonberger’s River Cities Cake, a black and white whipped cream cake. this cake is not for the “let me whip up something fast” dessert cook, but once you bite into its towering four layers, you will see why this first time entry became a winner.
Best in Presentation/Decoration went to Kim Kortenbach, whose dynamic Chambord and Buttermilk cake was tasty enough to garner votes in taste, too. Both first place winners received gift certificates from Cheesecakes Etc. Desserts, good for a cheesecake a month for three months.
Gunnar Kortenbach, the youngest entry at age eight, took second place in taste with Gunnar’s Chocolate Pizza Cake and third place went to Audrey Klugerman for her Brownie Marble Cheesecake. In Presentation/Decoration, the second place winner was Luly Atkinson, whose Strawberry Cheesecake, titled “Springs Cake” was surrounded with a wreath of flowers. Flowers also graced the third place Hawaiian Wedding Cake.
Eleven cakes were entered in this year’s contest. The variety of cakes ranged from an Austrian Linzer Torte to a Yellow Dump Cake, where all the ingredients are added at the same time and the result is surprisingly delicious. Miami Springs Police Chief Randall Dillings was heard to remark that there was not a bad cake among them.
Judges this year, in addition to Chief Dillings, were Philip Balbi, Karen Jones, Bill Wolar, and Darlene Mackintosh. In addition to the prizes donated by Cheesecakes Etc. Desserts, the Cake Bake Off was sponsored by Sav-A-Step Convenience Store. Once the judging was complete, cake slices were sold at a dollar a slice with the proceeds donated to local groups through the Springs River Festival Committee.
